↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how one of the most oppressive societies in recent history existed in Russia during the 19th century and how, during this time, Russian women were discouraged from being anything more than a wife and mother. It examines how there were many indicators of the oppressed role of women in the era and in that society, including the obstacles and discouragement of women writers at the time. It explores some of these issues and holds up the well-known early 19th century Russian author, Karolina Pavlova, as one example of how they were discouraged, but still managed to take part in the literature movement of that time.

From the Paper:

"One important illustration of the mindset toward women in that era was the way women authors were treated. Women writers were frequently made to feel that they had to choose between the love they had for their families and the love they had for their passion of writing. Women who wanted to be poets received definite negative messages by a society that wanted them to stay firmly in their roles as mothers and wives. It is an interesting piece of history because of the many English and American poets during that same general era that were female and were successful and for the most part accepted as artists in their time."
