In Plato's Symposium we are presented with a range of perspectives on love as expressed by a number of speakers. In this context, Plato's perspective on love may best be identified with that of Socrates who, in turn, credits the wise woman Diotima for teaching him the true nature of romantic love. As will be seen, this view of romantic love contends that love is actually directed not at individuals but at the acquisition of wisdom.

Romantic Love in Plato and Solomon In Plato's Symposium we are presented with a range of perspectives on love as expressed by a number of speakers. In this context, Plato's perspective on love may best be identified with that of Socrates who, in turn, credits the wise woman Diotima for teaching him the true nature of romantic love. In outlining the Plato's position in this regard, it is interesting to note how this theory of love is "romantic" in the sense that Socrates' telling of Diotima's account can be seen to echo Aristophanes' earlier
