"George Washington Carver was born and raised on the Moses Carver plantation in Diamond Grove, MO. He was not strong enough to work in the fields, so he did household chores and gardening, giving him early exposure to his future career. By the age of 10, he was known as the "plant doctor" and had begun to search for a formal education. Carver eventually made his way to Simpson College where he had to study piano and painting because they didn't offer any science classes. Intent on a science career, he transferred to Iowa Agricultural College (now Iowa State University), where he was the first black student."
