An overview of this neurodevelopmental disorder.
1,575 words (approx. 6.3 pages) | 5 sources | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper provides an overview of the neurodevelopmental disorder Rett Syndrome, discovered by Dr. Rett in 1966. The disease causes severe motor dysfunction, impairs or destroys communication abilities, and causes severe mental retardation in girls. The paper discusses the causes and symptoms of RS as well as some of the treatments and possible cures in the future.

From the Paper:

"The developmental brain disorder known as Rett Syndrome (occasionally misspelled "Rhett" or "Rhetts") was identified by Dr. Andreas Rett in 1966, and officially recognized in 1983 (Skotko, Koppenhaver, and Erickson, 145.) Rett Syndrome is almost only found in females, and the rare male examples have generally resulted in miscarriages and stillbirths (Milunsky 373). Rett Syndrome has characteristics in common with and is often mistaken for other developmental disorders such as Autism and Cerebral Palsy, but in fact is very different with a known genetic cause. Because this is a relatively newly identified disorder, not as much is known about it, although progress is being made. This paper will begin to take an overall look at the characteristics and symptoms, causes and potential treatments for Rett Syndrome."
