Paper Summary:

This document was written in response to Benjamin Rush's belief that women would make better citizens and wives if they were educated. The writer points out that Rush believed that women in the home would be a greater benefit to society, as well as to their husbands, because their knowledge about life would add to their skills as housewives.

From the Paper:

"In the time of 1787 the United States was only beginning to function as a country, and citizens were starting to discover their roles in the new society. Benjamin Rush, in response to this search for social placement, determined that women should be as equally educated as men. His perspective was influenced by the changes that were taking place in every facet of the country."
