Representation Ideology and Urban Form
A review of the photographic work of Latin American artist Gabriel Orozco.
900 words (approx. 3.6 pages) | 5 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the advent of poststructuralism and postmodernist theories of knowledge and how the common modes of representation of the city as a social space have been rendered problematic. Following on, this paper examines the work of Gabriel Orozco; a Latin American artist whose photographic studies in his native Mexico open insights into our understanding of the construction of identity and ideology within the frame of the city as social space. It further discusses how his work articulates the erosion of local identity in the face of the hegemonic ideology and modes of representation of globalization.
