As recently as the 1950s, sleep was thought to be a unitary process with varying levels of consciousness and corresponding changes in the relative proportion of high.voltage slow electroencephalograph (EEG) waves in cortical readings (Siegel, 1990, p. 49). The concept of a reticular formation in the core of the brainstem provided an anatomical substrate for the regulation of this sleep.wakefulness continuum (Siegel, 1990, p. 49). Minimal levels of activity in the reticular core and high.voltage EEG waves corresponded with the maximal intensity of sleep (Siegel, 1990, p. 49). This was thought to reflect a redistribution and not a reduction of cerebral synaptic activity (Madsen et al., 1991, p. 2601).
