From the Paper:
"Niccolo Machiavelli is one of the most controversial thinkers in Renaissance Europe. This is because his most famous work "The Prince" created a radically different and in some ways a dark and disturbing picture of political life. For example, in the "Introduction" to "The Prince" Anthony Grafton argues, "A prince who truly understood 'virtue'- in the sense of the qualities needed to perpetuate his state and his own power-would prefer the 'vice' of meanness to the 'virtue' of liberality." (Grafton xxiii). What this statement indicates is that Machiavelli was changing the way the political world was perceived."
