The paper suggests that differences between the two countries are fueled by the political and military leaders for their own vested interests and that religion is used as an instrument by both sides to gain the sympathy of the deprived masses and to create an atmosphere of religious hatred and fanaticism.

The blend of political instability, deep-seated monetary and social problems, and access to nuclear weapons has made it one of the most intentionally sensitive countries in the world. The war in neighbouring Afghanistan has positioned it at the very centre of global attention and projected its military ruler, General Pervez Musharraf, onto the world stage."
