The history of sports correlates strongly with the history of the United States in telling the story of race, and the inclusion of people of color throughout every facet of society. Learning the history of sports is to understand the racial struggles that have been evident in this country throughout history. It is therefore contended that while the sports industry of the United States has been engulfed with racial barriers throughout its history, these time periods strongly correspond to national events which brought race to the forefront of American society. "
