This paper briefly examines Pythagoras' early life and education and discusses how these helped form his outlook on life which developed into his philosophy. It describes how Pythagoras contributed to the early development and history of the study of philosophy. It shows how for Pythagoras, philosophy was a way of life, which would lead to the salvation of the soul.

"Pythagoras, an Ionian Greek, was born on Samos about 570 B.C. He immigrated to Crotona in Southern Italy where he established a society with religious, political, and philosophical aims. The considerable influence of the society over the city and surrounding area inevitably stirred up unrest and a revolt against the society, when it came, led to the murder of a number of the prominent members. Pythagoras, upon wise reflection, retired to Metapontum. The community temporarily recovered until another persecution occurred in the mid fifth century. Although these survivors scattered to cities such as Thebes, Phleius, and Tarentum, in the late fourth century they eventually died out."
