When a child has Down Syndrome, how does one approach puberty and what special circumstances should be considered? Few studies have been conducted related to the sexual development of children with Down?s. Many have often considered the discussion of sexual maturation in children with cognitive disorders a "taboo" topic. However, children with Down's who are experiencing puberty must deal with most of the same issues as ordinary children, including physical changes of the body, emergence of increased or heightened sexual awareness, awareness of modesty and privacy issues, and a leaning toward masturbation and sexual fulfillment."
