From the Paper:

"Latin America is a dynamic environment for politics, economics and finance. The region, more than other developing regions, has been especially hard hit with problems of interest rates and inflation spiraling out of control, and some nations, such as Brazil, have negotiated repayment "holidays" with the North American bankers. Against this background, one nation has tried to bring about changes in its economy not through increased government intervention, but through its opposite, the increased privatization of much of its state-owned businesses. Chilean economics for much of the twentieth century has been an experiment in privatization. Over the past twenty-five years, the nation has undergone significant reforms designed to bring the country closer to a true market economy. The effects of these privatization efforts are examined in this research."
