"The State's role has been actively debated, particularly in the context of globalisation and economic liberalization in India. One school of thought argues that excessive State intervention has stifled private initiative, creating a burgeoning bureaucracy and fiscal imbalances. With inefficiency and corruption eroding public confidence, leading commentators have suggested limiting the State's role to essential functions like Defence, Law and Order and External Relations. "
