"Since the early 1960s, aggressive behavior has been on the rise in the United States. This includes violent crimes, child abuse, rape, robbery, murder, and assault. In fact, since 1962, the rate of violent crimes per hundred thousand of U.S. population has doubled. On the international scene, although the world has professed peace since 1945 and the end of World War II, there are numerous local and regional conflicts that show that aggressive behavior has not subsided. In viewing this trend, one author commented:

Violence and warfare are the most dramatic and extreme forms of [primate) aggression, but the inability of people to resolve their differences amicably is also reflected in the spiraling rate of divorce, strikes, turmoil on our campuses, and in the alienation of many segments of our population ... "
