Many women, if not all, are affected psychologically by the experiences they have during pregnancy and go through a variety of emotional responses to these experiences (Hersen, 1990). Although doctors and clinical definitions can explain what is going on inside a pregnant woman physically, both resources commonly fall short when attempting to describe the emotional and mental aspects of pregnancy (Howard, 2003). Mood swings may be caused by normal hormonal changes but can lead to depression and stress conditions that may affect the health of both mother and child, even in an otherwise healthy pregnancy (Boston Women's Health Book Collective, 1992)."
