"Police work can be difficult and frustrating, the rewards few and far between. For the men and women who pursue a career in law enforcement it can even be life-threatening. Living under such conditions creates a great deal of stress and, for many, the result is alcoholism. While experts may argue as to just how prevalent this disease is among police officers, there is such evidence to support the reasons why it would exist. The purpose of this research will be to discuss alcoholism among the country's police force and the stresses that generate it. These include long hours, increased danger, alienation from the public and the legal system, and pressure within the family. Further, a look at some of the rehabilitative programs of the future will be included.
