Plankton are minute plants and animals living in oceans, lakes, and rivers and are at the bottom of the food chain. This makes them a very important component of the various ecosystems. This paper presents the results of a study of the distribution of plankton in inshore and off offshore habitats.
From the Paper:
"Plankton occurs in the ocean at various levels and distances from the shore depending on the availability of nutrients, light, the water temperature, and the presence of predators. These factors result in differences in plankton species found at vary levels in the ocean. Inshore, the water is more shallow, and light can easily filter through. In deeper offshore ocean areas, light-dependent plankton only occur to depths where light can penetrate. Nutrient concentrations also determine the types of plankton found in different areas of the ocean. Different species are found in colder areas of the ocean than in warmer areas."
