"Bringing Up Baby Matters of parenting are highly controversial. There are wide variations in theory when it comes to what is appropriate in terms of punishing and motivating the developing child (Wyckoff & Unell, 2002). This paper explores these issues in an archival study format and provides recommendations based upon the readings. In 2003, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report on spanking in which they defined the process as emotionally harmful to "both parent and child" and that spanking actually failed in its goals as it "interferes with the development of trust, a sense of security, and effective communication" between children and their parents (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2005)."
