Paper Summary:
Paraphilia is a psychosexual disorders characterized by sexual fantasies, feelings and activities involving a non consenting partner such as a children and nonhuman objects. The paper examines symptoms of the disorder and then summarizes a case-study where participants were treated with monthly injections of triptorelin and supportive psychotherapy. It critiques this treatment and discusses other options available to treat paraphilias.
From the Paper:
"The strengths of the journal article are Selective suppression of pituitary-gonadal function with a long-acting agonist analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone may abolish the deviant sexual fantasies, urges, and behavior of men with paraphilia by reducing serum testosterone to very low concentrations. Also getting this therapy is a better way then being surgical castration. They also tested each man who entered the study, a complete medical and psychiatric history was obtained, followed by a physical examination. Testicular volume was measured with an orchidometer. [23] Serum luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and testosterone and bone mineral density of the femoral neck and lumbar spine were measured. Weaknesses were that not too many people participated in the case study. Results were good at first then they became worse as time went on. Men started to act the same way as they did before."
