"The impact of packaging on a product's success or failure began to be measured in the early part of the 1900s. Manufacturers came to realize that the packaging which surrounded a product could be important to sales, and sought to enhance the package as a marketing tool. Packages became bolder, brighter and imaginative. Pantyhose were sold in large plastic eggs (L'eggs), and toothpaste was sold in pumps to reduce the mess of the traditional tubes. Colors proliferated as manufacturers fought for consumers' attention in overcrowded supermarkets. Packaging became an integral part of product planning with an emphasis on differentiating one product from another ("No More Eggs," 50).

Some concerned consumers began worrying about the amount of waste produced by packaging as early as the 1970s (Ashby, 19)."
