"Herman Daly's discusses the idea of ?dematerialization,? in his essay, ?Consumption and the Environment.? The concept of dematerialization focuses on "improved resource use" which could make a difference in many ways concerning consumption patterns. Applying "improved resource use" to SUV's and other vehicles is often discussed, but high emission- low gas mileage vehicles are still being manufactured at a fast pace. But improving the vehicles is only one step; drivers need to become less dependent on their vehicles, recognizing that there is not an infinite supply of resources needed to support the vehicles."
