The paper uses the following hypothesis as a means of identifying and testing the current research effort: If online learning is effective then it is anticipated that there will be corresponding improvements in student performance. This study therefore seeks to investigate the literature on online learning and develop a profile of the conditions under which it is most effective and extrapolate these conditions to determine whether online and e-learning are universally effective or whether these methods of teaching are effective only when subjective conditions are appropriate.

"The nature of e-learning, or distance learning, is extremely complex and is subject to multiple forms of clarification and discussion. The measure of effectiveness in such a context is an even more difficult proposition, as it indicates that certain known factors can be constructed in a setting that helps to further classify the overall "effectiveness" of a given research effort."
