"Two primary reasons why online instruction appeals to students is that it eliminates commutes to campus and studying at home or the office is more convenient, however, many feel that students miss valuable non-verbal cues from instructors and peers (Karpuk pp). Yet many students felt that they received a higher quality educational experience due to the lack of distractions from the classroom environment, while others felt that classroom distractions were simply replaced by distractions at home or office (Karpuk pp). Moreover, many students felt that more assignments were given in the virtual classroom to compensate for the absence of face-to-face meetings (Karpuk pp). However, instructor awareness to the amount of material provided in online classes, orienting the new online student and providing informal exchanges in addition to formal ones were felt to offset the lack of visual cues missing from face-to-face instruction (Karpuk pp)."
