In fact the majority of mental disorders such as schizophrenia, personality disorders, manic-depressive or bipolar disorders have long been misunderstood and mistreated. As a result of the misunderstanding of the mental disease process, fear and shame were often the hallmarks of those who were afflicted. At times, those afflicted with a mental disease were tortured, burned at the stake as heretics and even placed in "cleansing vats", all in the name of purifying the mind. Today, however, through a more compassionate and scientific understanding, mental disorders have become a recognizable disease characterized by a disruption of the body's psycho-neurobiological process (Docherty, et al, 2003)."
