Professional nursing has been an integral part of medical treatment for centuries. Men and (primarily) women have taken the role of nurse in a broad variety of contexts throughout the history of medicine. But, only until relatively recently has nursing received the scholarly attention it has long deserved. Much of this recognition came about from the work of people such as Florence Nightingale and others who were able to clearly differentiate the role of the nurse as more than simply an assistant to the doctor, but as a unique level of practitioner in its own right. In 1952, The Journal of Nursing Research was founded, becoming the first scholarly journal to focus exclusively on nursing (gem-nursing.org, 2005).
