"The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is designed to link the United States, Canada and Mexico as trading partners. The proposed 2,000-page treaty is an extension of the Free Trade Agreement which was made between the United States and Canada in 1989. NAFTA will remove tariffs and other restrictions on free trade among the three nations. The treaty is very ambitious in this regard; it intends to "roll back as many as 20,000 separate tariffs over the next 10 to 15 years."1 It is expected that this action will encourage more trade and investment among the three North American countries. In fact, NAFTA will create a consumer marketplace worth trillions of dollars in import and export trade. In this way, implementation of NAFTA will boost the economies of all three trading partners.
