This paper explains the meaning of topology in reference to computer networks, the different types of topology available, how they work, and their advantages and disadvantages.
From the Paper:
"With the P.C. revolution Local Area Networks (LAN) evolved encompassing a relatively small geographical area preferably a building and provided high speed and fault tolerant data networks. The Wide Area Networks (WAN) evolved with a view to covering broader geographical areas to inter-connect several LANs through a transmission medium. Networks distinguish themselves on the basis of three properties- Topology, Protocol and Architecture. The geometrical arrangement of the network is specified by the Topology, a common set of rules and signals that the computers use to communicate among themselves is prescribed by the Protocol and Architecture refers to a set of layers and protocols."
