"This research examines the historic role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in European affairs and how this role has evolved over recent decades. The structure of NATO is discussed, and the new missions for the international agency are analyzed.The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was established by the 1949 North Atlantic Treaty, commonly referred to as the Treaty of Washington. NATO's 16 member states are Belgium, Greece (since 1952), Norway, Canada, Iceland, Portugal, Denmark, Italy, Spain (since 1982), France, Luxembourg, Turkey (since 1952), Germany (since 1955), the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The North Atlantic Alliance is a defensive alliance based on political and military cooperation among independent member.."
