Paper Summary:
This paper explains that scientists believe that, around 2600 B.C., the Egyptians started the preservation of their dead by embalming; this process is called mummification. The author describes the full mummification process, which took approximately 70 days to finish and was performed by highly educated priests. The paper relates that, as long as the body was mummified and the proper elements were placed in the tomb, Egyptians believed the dead could live forever.
From the Paper:
"To ensure the removal of all the moisture from the body, the internal organs were removed. The brain was removed by a very skilled priest through the nose with the handy brain hook. Any mistake in this procedure could disfigure ones face. A cut made with the priests knife on the left side of the abdomen was how the organs of the chest and abdomen area were removed. The heart was left inside the body only because it was believed to be the center of a person's being and intelligence. The other organs were split up and put into four jars, which we now call them canopic jars."
