This paper discusses the issue of Islam and pluralism through a discussion of the challenges that faced Muhammad throughout his life and an analysis of how these challenges may have affected the Islamic tradition regarding pluralism. The definition of pluralism used in this paper is "the acceptance of other faiths which approach the same truths as one's own", rather than the alternative definition, "the tolerance of faiths other than one's own".
From the Paper:
"Following this period of his life, Mohammad accumulated followers from within Mecca, and in 621 he left Mecca, with his followers, to take up residence in Medina, a city to the north of Mecca (Rahman, 1989). It was hoped by the people of Medina that Mohammad, bringing his message of unity and peace, would be able to bring to rest the factious nature of the people of Medina. He did bring peace to Medina, and eventually came to control Medina politically, in 624 deciding to stage a war with the people of Mecca at Badr (Rahman, 1989).. In 626, we learn, with Mecca subdued, Mohammad returned there, where he died in 632."
