Paper Summary:
The purpose of this complete dissertation is to determine the efficacy of two different methods of mold spore trapping. One method is the traditional "non-viable" type method, and the other is the "viable" method of spore trapping. A critical review of the peer-reviewed and scholarly literature and qualitative analysis of the findings are used to accomplish this goal. This dissertation includes a relevant graphic and several tables.

From the Paper:
"Mold spores are "aerodynamic"; in other words, mold spores are designed to float in the air. Consequently, the simple and non-intrusive way to find hidden mold is to test the air. All effective environmental testing for mold spores begins with the collection of at least one volumetric air sample from the outside and one or more interior volumetric air samples from what are termed the "areas of concern. The volumetric air samples are collected with an air pump to which plastic tubing and a special kind of filter cassette are attached. The pump's flow-rate, as defined below, is calibrated to extract a specified volume of air for a specified length of time through the filter. This sample is then later examined under magnification in order to identify and count the mold structures, dead and alive. This step is important because, although they do not grow, dead ("non-viable") mold spores can still cause allergy and asthma problems in humans and have been found to be doing so on an increasingly significant level today (Gray, 2002)."
