Modern Intellectual History of the West

Paper Summary:

The revolutions and political developments of the last part of the eighteenth century and first half of the nineteenth were obvious outgrowths of the Enlightenment. Autocracy and mercantilism were replaced by democracy and a market economy. To understand the causes of these dramatic changes and the roots of these new ideologies that produced them, this paper reviews the basic tenets of the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason from which they sprung.

"The path to human wisdom or knowledge was understood more and more to be a matter of gathering facts about the natural world we lived in. Just as improved science led to technological advances, philosophy spread to politics and the social order. Reason became the foundation not only for science and philosophy but for political and social order. Incubated in the scholarly, philosophical womb of the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason gave birth to the modern world."
