From the Paper:

"In the beginning clinical scales were measured by their extreme diagnosis. When it was determined that the test could be used for other purposes, besides clinical use, it was decided to give these clinical scales classification numbers instead of the psycho- analytical names previously used. Here are the personality types tested for and their corresponding clinical numbers: Scale 1 Hypochondriasis, Scale 2 Depression, Scale 3 Hysteria, Scale 4 Psychopathic Deviate, Scale 5 Masculinity-Femininity, Scale 6 Paranoia, Scale 7 Psychasthenia, Scale 8 Schizophrenia, Scale 9 Hypomania, Scale 0 Social Introversion."
