From the Paper:
"Microsoft's business and performance needs to be studied in the light of its industry environment. Software continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy, generating revenues of more than $150 billion every year. About half of the industry's revenues is accounted for by software applications, with the balance emanating from developmental tools and infrastructure software. Microsoft has a healthy market share of all three segments. The dynamics of the software industry has undergone a significant change in recent years with the Internet enabling the move away from packaged software to Web-based software and applications. The standardization of Internet technologies such as Java and XML is helping accelerate industry wide conversion to Web-based applications, with Microsoft, Sun, AOL Time Warner and Oracle all pushing aggressively to take Web-based software to the next level of a new class of applications loosely termed as Web services."
