Software continues to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy, generating revenues of more than $150 billion every year. About half of the industry's revenues is accounted for by software applications, with the balance emanating from developmental tools and infrastructure software. Microsoft has a healthy market share of all three segments. The dynamics of the software industry has undergone a significant change in recent years with the Internet enabling the move away from packaged software to Web-based software and applications. The standardization of Internet technologies such as Java and XML is helping accelerate industry wide conversion to Web-based applications, with Microsoft, Sun, AOL Time Warner and Oracle all pushing aggressively to take Web-based software to the next level of a new class of applications loosely termed as Web services."
