"Although he is widely believed to be an Australian, Mel Gibson was actually born in Peekskill, New York on January 03, 1956 of Irish Catholic parents, the sixth of eleven children. His father was a railroad brakeman while his mother was an Australian opera singer. The family shifted to Australia when Mel was 12 years old, partly because his father wanted his children to avoid being drafted for the Vietnam War and partly because (as legend would have it) he had recently won a large amount of money at Jeopardy.(Brennen, 2002).
