"Muscle contraction is accomplished by the contact between nerves and muscles at neuromuscular junctions, which act much like the synapses between neurons. The nerve impulse arrives at the end bulb of the neuron and chemical transmitters are released which diffuse across the neuromuscular cleft. The transmitter molecules react with receptor sites on the muscle membrane and increases the membrane permeability to sodium ions.
