Paper Summary:
This paper discusses the New York City media industry of the 21st century. The paper examines the current influence the media has on the nation compared to the influence it had in the past century. The paper contends that NYC no longer dominates the media industry.
From the Paper:
"A brief consideration of the recent FCC ruling (June 2002) that was designed to allow fewer corporations dominate more media outlets is both a case in point that dominance is no longer based on the physical location (New York City) of major media, but on the financial condition of the corporation that owns those media units. On June 2, 2002, the FCC opened the door for fewer companies to own more media, concentrating power in smaller groups, and groups influenced, moreover, by smaller number of people. In July, the House of Representatives voted to reimpose the 35 percent limit for TV station ownership and in September, the Senate approved a stronger action, aimed at rolling back all the FCC had done, including the one allowing cross-ownership of newspapers by TV stations and so on (Layton, 2003, p. 18+)."
