848 words (approx. 3.4 pages) | 9 sources | MLA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper gives a brief history of the use of marijuana, both for recreational and medicinal purposes, looks at the extent to which it is used in the United States and considers the pros and cons of legalizing the drug.

From the Paper:

"Marijuana goes by a number of different names, in the United States; it may be called grass, pot, tea, reefer, weed, and Mary Jane. Smoked either in the form of a rolled cigarette or through a pipe. It is one of the oldest drugs, and has been used medicinally or as an intoxicant. The main psychoactive substance in marijuana is THC, which is short for tetrahydrocannabinol. Hashish, which is found on the top of the cannabis plant, has similar effects to marijuana. Marijuana can have hallucinogenic effects and the effect can range from a "simple" high to an intoxicating effect similar to alcohol. Over time, the user may develop a tolerance and require a greater dose to gain the desired effect."
