The following account summarizes the historical and medical as well as the legal aspects of marijuana.

Historically, marijuana use was practically unknown in the United States prior to 1930, except among Mexican laborers in the Southwest and musicians in the south. Since then usage has spread to all parts of the United States, particularly among teenagers. Indian help, nevertheless, has been known to man for at least 3,000 years before the Christian era and was first used for commercial purposes, such as the production of rope and textiles. It was mentioned in the ancient Sanskrit literature dating from 2000-1400 B.C. Later it was utilized for medicinal and anesthetic purposes by Chinese, Hindu, and Arab physicians. Not until the tent century of the Christian era was it used extensively for its intoxicant and euphoric properties in India ... "
