"This study will examine some of the major themes in the writings of Mao, and will consider whether Mao would agree with the policies and tactics of China's current political leadership, and why.

As Chai writes, "One cannot .... deny Mao's contribution to Marxist-Leninist doctrine. In his report on the peasant movement in Hunan in 1927, for example, he outlined his rural strategy based on the peasantry, which he termed the 'revolutionary vanguard.' In this sense he is a "Leninist in the best tradition; and the Report is a classic of Chinese Leninism. But it must be remembered that Lenin . . . . regarded the peasantry as only an auxiliary force in the proletarian revolution. And Mao, by giving the peasant the main role in the Chinese revolution, diverged from Lenin and made a new contribution" (Chai, 1975 ..."
