Paper Summary:
Why do some companies, divisions, or even managers seem to be able to consistently hire and retain the cream of the crop, while others fail to do so? Do managers truly get the staff they deserve? By analyzing the psychological contract between employee and employer, the impact of organizational structure and culture, group dynamics and leadership, motivation and performance management, this paper shows that, indeed, managers do get the staff they deserve.
From the Paper:
"This same thought is true as well in regards to corporate structure. Some employees perform better in a more rigid, traditional, multi-layered organizational structure, where lines of authority are clearly drawn. However these more bureaucratic styled organizational structures are often seen as meddlesome and ineffective in motivating employees to seek out new innovations and opportunities, or pursue creative ideas. (Ghoshal & Bartlett, 1998, in Brodbeck, 2002) Most employees prefer a more organic structure where collaboration occurs laterally, as the tasks warrant."
