"This paper will trace the evolution of the use of magazine and other print advertising by the automobile industry. Print ads for automobiles have existed for almost as long as automobiles themselves. In this regard, it has been stated that "soon after the horseless carriages began chugging their way into the hearts of Americans, auto advertising appeared". The first automobile ad was printed in 1902. It promoted the "Surrey" model car, which was manufactured by the Haynes-Apperson Company. This advertisement emphasized the mechanical features of the Surrey, including its twelve horsepower engine, its rod-steering capabilities, and its room for four passengers; in addition, the ad gave the price of the car as $1,800.
