The paper provides a brief historical look at Lyndon Johnson and his decision to send troops to Vietnam. "For President Johnson, it was clear that the only sensible way to handle the situation in Vietnam was to do so without committing American combat forces. However, Johnson provided no indication that he was personally considering a very different course of action in the future. Obviously, Johnson's decisions concerning Vietnam, at least so far, were based on the outright attack by North Vietnam against the American destroyers. Yet with the passage of the Tonkin Resolution, Johnson was committed to stopping the aggression in Vietnam and the spread of communism which it was feared may take complete control of not only Vietnam but also its many neighbors, such as Cambodia and Laos."
