This paper explains that self-esteem is a branch of personality psychology; the under-evaluation of one's self-worth leads to many psychological problems and physical manifestations. The author points out that many tools such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, which is one of the most widely accepted psychometric instruments and the BACH, which includes ten "self" statements based on rationale and statistical grounds, have been developed to assay an individual's self-esteem. The paper relates that persons with extensive tattoos often have low self-esteem and exhibit evidence of antisocial personality disorders, which are grouped in cluster B.
From the Paper:
"A major factor that leads to a personality disorder is sexual abuse during childhood. Many studies have been done to identify the abuse and to treat its manifestations as early as possible in the hope that the personality structure is not too rigidly defined or unamenable to therapeutic intervention. High levels of abuse and victimizaiton have been reported within psychiatrically hospitalized populations. Although sexual abuse is not a DSM-IV diagnosis, its contribution to the development of major psychopathology in children, adolescents, and adults justifies its inclusion in the discussion of personality."
