"Critical Review: Beauty and the Labour Market Hamermesh and Biddle wanted to study the economics of discrimination in the labor market. They investigated the possible effect that good and bad looks might produce on earnings by examining if standard earnings equations offer evidence of a pay differential based on looks. They examined three surveys: the 1977 Quality of Employment Survey; the 1971 Quality of American Life survey; and the Canadian Quality of Life study. These studies reflect a variety of measures of earnings. What is common for all the surveys is that the interviewer had to rate the person on appearance."
