This paper compares two speeches taken from Plato's 'Republic' and Sophocles' 'Oedipus Rex' in order to understand persuasive speeches through reasoning and metaphor. By realizing the power of reasoning in law, and ethics, both Sophocles and Plato bring forth convincing persuasive arguments as to the nature of truth. According to the paper, although Oedipus and Glaucon cannot truly understand what their counterparts are saying, Teiresias and Socrates are wise men that have a careful use of language to persuade their arguments.

"In this study, the basis of classical speech will be analyzed to compare how Sophocles and Plato use reason and metaphor in their speech formats. In many ways, the classical use of reasoning helps to define what is right or wrong within argumentative speech, which provides similarities in how these two authors persuade their audience. By examining how these various speeches are created, one can realize why language is a powerful tool--via reasoning and metaphor--that helps to construct vivid and morally 'righteous' arguments. In essence, this literary study will analyze the classical language used in Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and Plato's Republic."
