↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper explores how the United States has moved from a position in its colonial days of religious intolerance to one of tolerance. It examines the arrival of many of the different religions and how their communities started and were accepted. It finally looks at the religious diversity in the United States today.

From the Paper:

"One of the stories that most American children are taught about our country as they are growing up is that the Pilgrims came to the New World for religious freedom. While this statement is in some sense true, it is also misleading: The Puritans did indeed come to America for religious freedom, but only for themselves. They wished to be able to worship as they wished but this did not translate into tolerance for the religious beliefs and practices of others or into an attempt to create the kind of religiously pluralistic community that we enjoy in the United States today.
