"The timpani, or kettledrums, are percussion instruments that play a unique role in Western orchestral music. Like all drums, their origins are lost in the very distant past. But, because their development is somewhat more complicated than that of most percussion instruments, the history of timpani is very interesting. Over the centuries timpani have progressed from mere accessories for military units to very sophisticated instruments that play an integral role, far beyond that of most percussion instruments, in the modern orchestra.
The kettledrum consists of "a large bowl-shaped resonating chamber," which is usually made of copper, and a drumhead, often of specially prepared calfskin, that covers the opening and can be tightened or slackened by various means (Blades 826).
