Nikita Khrushchev, who followed Stalin to power, characterized Stalin's leadership as creating a cult of personality. What was it that gave Stalin such power? Was it his ability to speak convincingly on the benefits of Marxism? The fortunate accident of his rise to power coinciding with the rise of industrialization? Or did Stalin simply create a cult, replacing the religion that he nearly destroyed?
